In 1997 MSN, AOL and CompuServe were three of the biggest names on the internet. They weren’t just offering dial-up internet connections like other ISPs, but they also provided ‘on-line services’, offering news, weather, lifestyle magazines, chat and online shopping. Whilst we’d recognise these services as web portals today, back in 1997 these were revolutionary features – and they came at a cost.
