Like all computer fans, we love processors – but we want to find out which ones were the best. We’ve got the tech specs, but what really matters is how much impact they had. That’s where you come in. Are you a Z80 fan or do you have a Motorola 68000 tattoo? Let us know which chip is your favourite and, more importantly, why it should be remember as the most influential chip ever hewn from silicon.

Here’s the starting line-up:

1. 4004 – The first, but does it live on in your heart?

2. 8088 – Of original IBM PC fame

3. 80386 – First 32-bit and (in its DX form) first with floating point

4. Intel Core Duo

5. Z80 – It still is in used in embedded applications!

6. 6502 – The main competitor to Z80

7. 68000 – One for Atari ST and Amiga fans!

8. Power (and Power PC) – apart from its once use in Apples it is now the most used processor in supercomputers

9. Arm – originally used in the BBC Archimedes, but now the force behind the majority of mobile phones

10. PIC – available from about 50p each and possibly the most used in the world today
