The run up to this election has seen politicians promoting themselves more via Twitter feeds or Facebook groups than by kissing babies in the street. Clearly this shows us technophiles that today’s politicians are embracing the internet age – or does it? How much of this is just posturing? Did the empty seats in the House of Commons during the debate over the Digital Economy Act indicate that most MPs didn’t understand the Act’s impact, or that they just didn’t care? We decided to find out just what technology policies the different parties are offering, and interviewed the people who will be writing the tech manifesto for their parties if they win the election. There are some impressive claims being bandied about.

Labour has been very vocal about its technology policies, not least its Digital Economy Act. This gives the government the right to block sites infringing copyright and ban downloaders from accessing the internet. They are also championing rolling out high-speed internet (well, 2Mbps) for everyone by 2012 and “superfast” 100Mbps broadband for 90 per cent of the population by 2017.

The Conservatives also want super-fast broadband for most of the country (which would be achieved by opening up BT’s infrastructure to other companies) and would reduce the corporation tax rate to encourage new technology businesses to set up in the UK.

The Liberal Democrats were vociferous in their opposition to the Digital Economy Act, and have plans to uphold net neutrality and overhaul copyright law. They too want high-speed broadband for all.

So just what are the most important tech policies for each party? Read on to see.

Conservative party

Jeremy Hunt, Shadow Secretary for Culture, Media and Sport told us: “Our key policy to promote the technology industry is to ensure that Britain has a modern, fast broadband infrastructure. We will deregulate the market and force BT to give access to its underground ducts and overhead telegraph poles to rival ISPs. This will allow ISPs to lay their own fibre at a lower cost, and a super-fast broadband-supporting fibre network will be established over much larger parts of the UK. Funding, where needed, would come from the Digital Switchover segment of the licence fee.”

What about the technological economy? “It’s vital that we encourage technology companies to set up in the UK. We’ll cut the headline rate of corporation tax to 25p or lower and the small companies’ rate to 20p, funded by reducing complex allowances.”

What in the Tories’ opinion have Labour got wrong? “An over reliance on massive-scale IT projects that have gone over budget and not been delivered on time. We will create a level playing field for open-source IT in government procurement and open up government IT contracts to [smaller companies] by breaking up large IT projects into smaller components.”

  • Super-fast broadband for all: Will deregulate the market and open up BT’s infrastructure to competitors. Paid for using the Digital Switchover section of the BBC licence fee.
  • Right to data: Statistics like street-by-street crime levels and power consumption of Government buildings to be put online.
  • Government to use open-source IT: Cost of large-scale IT projects would be reduced.
  • Cap government IT projects at £100m: Would let smaller IT companies help out.
  • Corporation tax reduction: Corporation tax rate reduced to 25p to attract tech companies.

Labour Party

Ben Bradshaw, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport told us: “Labour wants Britain to be the world leader in the digital economy. We will create over 250,000 skilled jobs by 2020 and [become] the world leader in public service delivery. “We will ensure universal access to today’s broadband services at 2Mbps by 2012 – this will be delivered through upgrades to the existing networks and be supported with public funding including the underspend from the Digital Switchover Help scheme.”

“The Digital Economy Act is a key part of our active industrial strategy, helping us maintain and build on the digital economy. It ensures a competitive digital communications infrastructure [and] protects intellectual property. The Conservatives offered no practical solutions on [either] of these.”

Labour also has plans for a new technology institute: “The Institute of Web Science will be based in Britain and will work with government and business to realise the social and economic benefits of technological advances. It will assemble the best of the world’s scientists and researchers and be headed by Sir Tim Berners-Lee and the leading web science expert Professor Nigel Shadbolt.”

  • High-speed broadband: 2Mbps for all by 2012, paid for by a fixed telephone line levy of 50p a month. 100Mbps for 90 per cent of the country by 2017.

Liberal Democrats

We asked Don Foster, Shadow Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, which Lib Dem policies would interest a PC Plus reader. “Our policies on broadband roll-out and extending IT skills, and the work we’ve done on the Digital Economy Bill,” he answered. “The more people who have the skills and access to make use of technology, the more useful it becomes.

“We do not believe that the country’s broadband infrastructure can be left solely to market forces, which is why we advocate an outside-in use of public funds to begin delivering broadband from day one to rural areas. The market will deliver the infrastructure in urban areas.”

How would the Liberal Democrats attract tech companies to the UK? “We support the proposed tax break for the video games industry and we will also tackle the growing burden of red tape, which continues to cost businesses increasing amounts of time.”

What was the current Government’s biggest technology mistake? “Not prioritising the Digital Economy Bill in debate. The Bill was an opportunity to ensure that everyone is able to take advantage of the opportunities presented by the internet. The government’s unwillingness to give the Bill the time necessary for proper parliamentary scrutiny shows how low in their priorities it sat.”

  • Superfast broadband for all: Would use public funds to get broadband for everybody available straight away.
  • Support for tech business: Tax breaks for video-games companies and high-tech industries to encourage growth.
  • Overhaul copyright law: Update laws to reflect the technology of modern-day society.
  • Support for net neutrality: Would strongly oppose blocking of internet sites.

Small parties with big tech policies

What do the smaller parties contending for parliamentary seats offer to people passionate about the web, computers and technology? We spoke to five and found out. We also asked which of the policies that the big three parties were proposing could, in their opinion, damage the internet and technological development.
During our fact-finding mission we found much of interest. The Communist Party want to make tech-literacy part of the educational process as they feel computers are no longer a luxury, but a necessity. The Green party think broadband should be a fixed-rate service available to all. The Pirate Party UK are all about free speech – and not just on the internet. They want to ensure that personal privacy is a priority of government and industry. Plaid Cymru want an ultra-fast national broadband network and the SNP aren’t sure the Digital Economy Act goes far enough. The last word goes to the Monster Raving Loony Party, who, when contacted said: “What on earth are you talking about? Don’t be so serious.”

“There are IT-related issues important to us. We oppose the Digital Economy Act, a sop to international big business. We recognise the need for a far-reaching and proactive approach to ensure all citizens can access all aspects of technology. It’s obvious that the speed of the technological revolution has made basic access and experience in using computers and the internet a necessity. Britain’s Broadband speed currently ranks 17th in the world, 23 times slower than Japan. We need an integrated communications strategy to bridge the gap. Education is essential to ensuring that tech-literacy is considered a vital part of modern life in Britain. IT needs to be given greater prominence in the National Curriculum and to be fully integrated into all its aspects.”

“We don’t just know what technology is, we know how it works and how it has affected our society. In the modern age, existing copyright and patent laws do not make sense. Our policy is to shorten the duration of copyright to five years, and to allow the sharing of copyrighted material provided that no profit comes of it.

The Digital Economy Act is a terrible piece of legislation. It legitimises corporate spying on individuals, forces ISPs to throttle or even ‘suspend’ connections based only on allegations of infringement and allows copyright holders to demand ISPs censor websites on the flimsiest of evidence. PPUK is unquestionably against these policies.”

“The Green Party believes that the development of computer communications has reached the point where BT should have an obligation to provide broadband-capable infrastructure to every household. Funding for marginal ‘uneconomic’ lines may come from a small levy on every access line. The principle of universal access at the same base price to the household should prevail.

Many of us believe that [the Digital Economy Bill] threatens to infringe fundamental human rights through the disconnection of internet accounts and the new ‘website blocking’ laws could result in new ways to suppress free speech and legitimate activity.”

“Connecting Wales to the world digitally will encourage innovation and job creation. We believe that new technology must be harnessed to provide Wales with a strong voice on the global stage and to ensure that there are no communication ‘not spots’. We call for research into the construction of a super-fast national broadband network. We also support compulsory network sharing between mobile phone and broadband operators. Westminster can learn a lot from the National Assembly with its transparent and democratic processes. We’re also concerned about the threat to our civil liberties implied by increased internet monitoring, and will campaign for freedom of the internet.”

“While the ambition to secure universal broadband access is to be welcomed, more must be done to protect those who are working in our creative economy. Our creative industries contribute significantly to the economy and are a key route to economic recovery, yet protection for artists and creators remains an afterthought. Writing letters to persistent downloaders and threatening slower internet speeds seems a feeble response to the loss of millions of pounds of income to artists and creators. What is needed is a mixture of effective technical measures and creative solutions, but above all the political will to tackle this problem.”


Question time with the Pirate Party

For some political parties technology is the reason they exist, and it seems to be paying off. The Swedish Pirate Party caused a stir last year when it gained two seats in the European Parliament. The UK’s Pirate Party has the same three core platforms: reform copyright and patent law, end ‘excessive’ surveillance of innocent people and ensure ‘real’ freedom of speech. But all these issues have possible downsides. We asked Pirate Party UK’s leader Andy Robinson if its policies would actually work in the real world.

PCP: Surely reforming copyright and patent law will damage British businesses?

Andy Robinson: There are always winners and losers when any law changes. Reforming copyright law will reduce the power of record industry ‘rights-holders’ to dictate what music we get to hear and what we don’t. It will also benefit lesser-known musicians who don’t want to sign away future royalties to get their music heard. Reforming patent laws to fix problems like the ring-fencing of huge areas by overly broad patents will increase competition and reduce red-tape. A better regime would encourage manufacturing and design investment, boosting the economy at no cost to taxpayers.

Did you know it’s illegal to sing Happy birthday in public without paying a fee? The Pirate Party would like to put an end to this.

PCP: Isn’t surveillance central to UK security?

AR: A certain degree of surveillance is necessary, but we urgently need to set sensible limits on it. Vehicles are being tracked: the police’s automatic number plate recognition camera network takes 14 million photos a day. We need rules that say how much is too much, before we sleepwalk into a surveillance state.

PCP: One man’s freedom of speech is another man’s persecution. How do you intend to protect the weaker and less vocal in society from the strongest and loudest?

AR: New media outlets empower many of the people who were previously disempowered to have their say. The best counter to persecution is not censorship, but education. Teaching people to get together and stand up for themselves is far better than short-term measures taken just so politicians can be seen to be doing something. That said, we support current equality legislation banning unfair discrimination and would not change this policy.

PCP: Where do you stand on more prosaic issues like internet speed?

AR: Consumers have been complaining about this for years. We plan a system where payment will be based on the speed the user actually gets, not the advertised headline speed. Of course, we’ll be unable to achieve any of our aims, prosaic or otherwise, without votes or the support of donations through our site (www.ppuk.it/donate).

The internet has become a fundamental part of our daily lives – a rich source of facts, discussion, fun and community that’s home to an infinite number of ways to share thoughts and kill boredom. There are, of course, many opportunities to achieve this in the open world too – but that’s not quite so easy for a lot of folk. For many disabled and special-needs people, the internet has proven to be truly life-changing. “It’s opened up a world that would otherwise not exist,” says Jay Cohen, founder and manager of www.disabledonline.com, a global online community comprising forums, blogs, links, resources and a store of assistive technology.

DisabledOnline is a window to a new world for many users.

Cohen suffers from muscular dystrophy, rendering him unable to use a keyboard. Nonetheless, he’s been running this busy site since launching it as a message board in 2004. “To have an opportunity to communicate with others, research information and find entertainment, all from the comfort of your home, makes the internet a true blessing for those with physical limitations,” he explains.

A real boost

Alex Barker runs and works on the Advice and Information Line for AbilityNet (www.abilitynet.org.uk), a charity that provides technological help and assistance to any of the UK’s 9.8 million disabled citizens who want it. “People with disabilities have found the internet a real boost because it helps to make life easier by providing online access to services such as banking and food shopping, and also gives them the ability to network with other people who are in the same situation as themselves,” he says. “Isolation can be an issue, but the advent of support groups means people can join an online community from the comfort of their own home.”

AbilityNet is funded by grants and donations, and by charging for some services in order to generate the money necessary to provide advice and assistance for free. It also has links with some of the tech industry’s biggest names. “Both Microsoft and IBM support us in terms of giving us office space and so on,” explains Barker. In fact, the charity was born out of IBM in the 1980s, when the company noticed a small group of its employees providing assistance to disabled users and elected to provide start-up funding for a dedicated organisation in that vein. In 2008, AbilityNet was able to directly assist 43,724 people in overcoming their accessibility issues with computers – largely through its free phone and email support lines. Particularly successful lately is the charity’s new wiki, which is known as AbilityNet GATE (Global Assistive Technology Encyclopaedia) and can be found at http://abilitynet.wetpaint.com. AbilityNet GATE can be added to and updated by anyone with anything to share about accessible computer use.

AbilityNet’s work with the IT world itself is just as important as the many ways it goes about providing information to its users. “I think AbilityNet as an organisation has tried to make people more aware of what is good practice in terms of the provision of IT, and hopefully we’ve managed to change the perceptions that people have of disability,” says Barker. “A computer makes it so easy for someone with a disability to work at the same speed as their peers. I work on the Advice and Information Line and it’s so rewarding helping someone change their settings on their computer to make it easier for them to work effectively.” That change in perception is key – the internet is a great leveller, providing the same potential to absolutely everyone. “The internet has made accessing information so much easier, so even if you don’t have the physical ability to go and find the information, you can probably find it online.”

As well as information, the internet gives users the option to remain anonymous. Does the fact that other internet users don’t immediately know they’re chatting to someone with a disability mean they act in a way they otherwise wouldn’t? “It may play a factor in certain situations,” thinks Cohen. “I suppose it all depends on the circumstance. I have been on social networks and chatrooms where I didn’t disclose my disability – only because I felt there wasn’t a need. Sometimes I would share this, other times I wouldn’t. The usual reaction is indifference, although there has been the occasional surprise and curiosity reaction. You really have to take it all in your stride [and remember that] most of the time you are dealing with a complete stranger.”
While there are a great many services and communities dedicated specifically to disabled and special-needs internet users, it’s a mistake to think such folk are behaving differently to anyone else online. “We mostly try to keep an open discussion,” says Jay in regard to DisabledOnline’s forums. “We want our members to have the ability to voice whatever is on their minds, as long as it’s respectful to others. We aren’t looking for any specific agendas in our chatrooms: it’s an open forum and we plan on keeping it that way.”

Neither is there a huge centralised online community available for disabled people, explains Cohen: “I think it’s just like any other segment of the population. Sometimes they get bored at one spot, so they visit another. Then they come back after a while. The community is growing, so with that more options arise.” And the web also offers the opportunity for easy and fluent discussion across international borders, something that can otherwise be very tricky for people with limited mobility. “I believe it’s helped unite the community by bringing together voices from all over the world. We have members not only from the US and UK, but from India, New Zealand, South Africa and other countries. We are truly a worldwide community.”

Vital assistance

It would be very tricky for many disabled people to enjoy the benefits of the web without the help of assistive technology – a catch-all term for anything that enables disabled people to achieve things that would be trickier without hardware or software assistance. The term encompasses everything, from ramps and dropped pavements to Braille printers and brain-computer interfaces. Also included are built-in operating systems and browser functions that make computers much easier to operate. Examples include getting the computer to emit a certain tone when the Caps Lock is activated, and the ClickLock utility, which enables highlighting and dragging of on-screen items without having to keep the left mouse button pressed.

Cohen had a definitive answer when we asked what type of assistive technology has proven most useful to him: “I have pretty severe physical limitations. So for me personally, voice recognition software has had a huge impact on my life. It allowed me the freedom to pursue my vision of creating DisabledOnline. I highly recommend it for those who have the inability of operating a standard keyboard and mouse.”

Although he helps with a broad range of different needs, AbilityNet’s Barker agrees: “I would say that one of the main developments is within voice recognition software. Quite a large number of our clients are interested in using this technology and now it’s becoming easier to access as it comes bundled with Windows Vista and Windows 7.” While third-party titles such as Dragon Naturally Speaking provide far more features, the fact that they can cost up to £200 presents a major obstacle to a lot of people who might otherwise benefit from them. Whatever else you want to say about Vista, it was a big leap forward in terms of universally available speech recognition – both for replacing mouse and keyboard dependency with voice commands, and for dictating documents and emails in almost any application. While speech software remains a long way off replacing all manual interactions with our PCs, it really comes into its own in continual usage by those who need it. It’s worth noting that we interviewed Cohen via email, and had no idea it was all done thanks to voice recognition software until he mentioned it.

In general, though, are the major operating system and browser providers doing all that they can? “I think that it’s getting easier now for people to make small tweaks to their systems,” offers Barker. “For example, a client with Parkinson’s may benefit a lot from just turning Filter Keys on. It’s free and this just shows that adaptive technology doesn’t have to cost anything.” More standardisation online has helped too: “I have seen significant improvements with accessibility online,” says Cohen. “There are still some sites that need to improve their layouts, but in general I do see the World Wide Web Consortium Accessibility Guidelines being followed.”

the-internet Tim Berners-Lee, and the organisation’s Accessibility Guidelines lay out key best-practice rules that every website should follow. Major ones include providing text-based alternatives for any image, video or audio content, ensuring that everything is accessible via keyboard alone, providing easy means of navigation and orientation across busy sites and ensuring legibility. And yet website and software creators are still routinely guilty of even the most basic oversights. The issue of colour-blindness, for instance, is regularly overlooked. Only a pitiful handful of games provide alternate colour schemes for people who struggle to differentiate between green and red, and far too many design-led websites don’t seem to notice or care that their fancy Flash menus are completely inaccessible to anyone who lacks the dexterity to use a mouse.

Yet matters are gradually and continually improving. The internet succeeds in knocking down all barriers – whether they be down to age, gender, ethnicity or physical capabilities – and, as the already multifarious means of accessing it continue to increase, so too will the traditional barriers of communication and entertainment further erode.

It’s not all iPods and MacBook Pros, Apple has been known to design, build and sell some serious flops.

When Steve Jobs speaks, the world listens. His fabled Reality Distortion Field makes even the shiniest piece of chrome and plastic glisten just that little bit more. The phrase ‘One more thing’ moves every member of the audience to the very edge of their seats, knowing that whatever follows, they’ll soon have one in their possession. But it wasn’t always like this, and even the all-powerful Apple of today sometimes stumbles in mid-stride. We’ve gone in search of the 10 biggest flops, missteps and bad ideas that found a half-chewed worm emerging from the apple of our eye.

1. Pippin

Super Nintendo. Master System. Jaguar. Megadrive. Pippin. Can you spot the odd one out? It sounded like a child’s toy, but not many children ever had the chance to play on Apple’s ill-fated games console, Pippin. Technologically speaking it was a Mac in a smaller box, intended to play hot CD-based gaming classics like Terror Trax, The Journeyman Project and Mr Potato Head Saves Veggie Valley.

But whereas most games manufacturers quickly learned the importance of controlling their ecosystem with a vice-like grip, Apple planned to sell the core technology to several different companies – which is ironic in light of the company’s current modus operandi. Unfortunately, like everyone who tried to take on gaming giants Sega and Nintendo, Pippin was a miserable failure. It was an underpowered, undersupported system that reportedly only sold around 5,000 units in the US. Being a computer, Pippin did have some interesting technology on its side, including innovations like internet access, but without the games to back it up, it was all for nothing.

Also, it was called Pippin.

After Pippin crashed and burned, Apple largely gave up on gaming – and most developers still avoid the Mac. However, times have changed. The iPhone’s gaming library hasn’t defeated the mighty Nintendo, but it’s the first thing for a long, long time to pose a really genuine threat to it, if only among casual players.

2. Apple USB Mouse

The infamous ‘Hockey Puck’ is one of Apple’s most mocked inventions, appearing with the launch of the iMac in 1998 and promptly hanging around homes and offices like a bad smell for years to come. Not only was it ugly, it made pointing and clicking about as much fun as typing on a keyboard covered with needles, using a speech recognition system that insisted you neck a balloon full of helium before every instruction, or anything involving Microsoft Office’s ‘helpful’ paperclip.

Not only was its round shape clumsy and uncomfortable, it was far too imprecise when gripped and prone to turning instead of moving. The cord was far too short if you plugged it into the machine rather than the USB ports on a Mac keyboard, and the buttons weren’t very comfortable. Some good did come out of it, though – third-party manufacturers made a fortune selling alternatives and adaptors.

3. iPhone Apps

When the iPhone was first revealed in all its wonderful glory, one thing was notably missing: applications. Apple got to write them, serving up sleek email and calendaring, maps and music playing. Everyone else was limited to creating websites that could be blessed with an icon on the home screen, without access to any of the interesting hardware that made the iPhone so innovative. Steve Jobs described this as “a very sweet solution”; everyone else went with ‘bad joke’. As was pointed out many times, if web pages were up to the job, why were all of Apple’s own apps Cocoa-based, with not a single HTML offering among them?

In retrospect, this was the first sign of trouble brewing. The App Store is now huge, and many have made a fortune from it, but Apple’s control over the platform is only becoming more problematic. From junk programs to bizarre rejections, scaling issues and the high cost of entry, every day sees new complaints from developers.

Ironically, the increased prominence of HTML5 coupled with Apple’s lockdowns has persuaded many that, just maybe, taking the web route might be better after all. One of the most notable examples is Google. After going through all kinds of trouble getting the Google Voice app approved, the company realised that it could allow anyone with a smartphone to log on by making the service available via the browser. Anyone in the US, anyway – Google Voice is still to be released here.

4. Apple Lisa

Apple kit is too expensive. That’s the most common criticism of the company, and it has been right from the start. The Lisa, launched in 1983, was an attempt to go after business customers by offering a more powerful system, higher resolution graphics and support for multitasking and protected memory. It found a market, particularly in document creation, but the cheap availability of both IBM PCs and standard Macintosh systems worked against it.

The Lisa did however offer expansion ports, and a snappy name – although one with no easy explanation. The official version is that it stands for Local Integrated Software Architecture, but nobody believes that. The standard backronym is Lisa: Invented Stupid Acronym, but most believe it was simply named after Lisa Jobs, Steve’s daughter. Jobs worked on the project for a while before jumping ship to work on the Macintosh project.

The Lisa was just too expensive to take off when it was launched in the early ’80s.

5. Newton

Pity the poor Newton. Probably Apple’s least-deserved flop, this PDA platform (the actual devices were called MessagePad) was truly ahead of its time. It featured integrated handwriting recognition (which worked reasonably, if not completely reliably), was controlled by a touchscreen, and offered lots of applications to make early adopters’ lives easier, including notes, contacts and dates. That’s nothing too special by today’s standards, but it was an exceptionally powerful device in the early ’90s. However, this was only intended to be the start of Newton’s capabilities. Apple saw the devices as computers in their own right, and we’ve yet to truly see a successor that has actually pulled off that massive leap. Perhaps the iPad will be it…

6. Motorola ROKR

While the hardware was Motorola, the appeal of the ROKR was all down to Apple. This was the first phone built around syncing to iTunes, and one of the few third-party products to get the full Steve Jobs stage treatment. And… it wasn’t good. At all. Not only was it a tacky product, it was stuffed with infuriating limitations, like only being able to hold 100 songs no matter how much extra storage it was given, offering no way of buying music online and connecting to your Mac or PC via a slow USB 1.1 cable instead of the faster 2.0 standard. Jobs’s demo of the phone conveyed absolutely none of his usual enthusiasm, and for good reason. This was 2005. In 2007, Apple released the iPhone, and the failed first attempt at a Jobs-approved phone was consigned to history.

7. Apple TV

The Jobs seal of approval isn’t always a guarantee of quality, then – and Apple TV is another example of a product that failed to make the grade. Apple TV combined the worst of several worlds – reliance on the Apple ecosystem, lack of an optical drive and the state of internet-available entertainment in the UK back in 2007 – to produce a largely useless electronic paperweight. In fairness, the Apple TV wasn’t a terrible unit, but it hit too early and was too much a company player instead of focusing on what customers would actually be best served by.

Nowadays there are so many other options available that the window of opportunity for it has well and truly closed. Apple still makes the devices, but even it has largely moved on to focusing on new products. Apple TV may have introduced people to the idea of media streaming in their house, but it’s products like the WD-TV Live and PlayOn that are finally making the humble computer a fundamental part of the TV-watching experience.

8. QuickTake Camera

Much like the Newton, the QuickTake’s failure had less to do with the product itself than the situation it found itself in. It was one of the first consumer-level digital cameras, so it was fairly rough and ready – no screen, no easy photo deletion – and it shot at a resolution of 640 x 480, with a pitiful 1MB of memory. Three different versions were released from 1994 onwards, but like most of Apple’s non-computing-focused products, Jobs axed the line after returning to power.

9. The Twentieth Anniversary Mac

$7,499. We shall repeat that: $7,499. No matter how much of an Apple obsessive you might be, no matter how much you think the user interface and style warrants high price tags, dropping $7,499 on a new machine to celebrate a company’s milestone is on the wrong side of the Lala River in the valley of Areyoukidding. This was 1997, when a regular Mac of the same specification would cost you just $3,000. Apple managed to sell a handful at this insane price, but it was quickly forced to back down.

Fancy spending $8k on a prettified Mac? Didn’t think so.

By 1998, when the unit was discontinued, the price was down to under $2,000. It may have looked snazzy next to the resolutely ugly beige boxes of the time, but the Twentieth Anniversary was proof that you can in fact put a price on style, and it’s one that most people aren’t ultimately that willing to pay. It has become something of a collector’s item, however; perhaps that counts as success of a kind.

10. MobileMe

Apple had no excuse for MobileMe to flop. The idea was as obvious as it was brilliant – syncing mail, calendars, files and photos between your computer, your iPhone (you did buy one, right?) and the web. So what went wrong? Well, everything. Not only was it overpriced – and at £50 for a year, remains so – but the original version barely worked. File sharing was missing in action, online storage was too slow and the calendar was a joke compared to Google’s offering. As for email, it was fine if you actually wanted to use an Apple-branded address, but with more and more of us switching to personal domains, especially for professional purposes, MobileMe’s lack of proper domain mapping really bit down hard.

Even the launch of the service was a big disaster – the pages were slow, the servers were constantly down, the push messaging promised didn’t work, and worst of all, a number of trial users found their credit cards charged too early. Apple tried to patch up problems by extending the service’s free trials, but there’s no doubt that what most who tried it in those early days remember is a horrible experience from a company that makes its money providing the best. Not cool, Apple. Not cool at all.
